The Bishop's Lenten Appeal and the Virginia Assembly
Dear Friends:
Ever wonder where the millions contributed to the Bishop's Lenten Appeal (BLA) go? Some of it supports the Virginia Catholic Conference (VCC), the lobby arm of the two Virginia Bishops, Paul Loverde of Arlington and Francis DiLorenzo of Richmond.
In the current session of the Virginia General Assembly, the VCC played a key role in defeating HB 112, the Personhood of the Preborn bill. VCC director, Jeff Caruso testified on Church teaching, but remained neutral which resulted in two Republican legislators voting no in subcommittee, essentially killing a bill that had the potential to spur a reexamination of Roe v. Wade.
The Conference supported other pro-life bills, e.g., banning funding of Planned Parenthood, but helped defeat the most important bill of all recognizing the dignity of the baby in the womb.
Personhood bills are being introduced all over the country and have the potential to directly confront the reasoning of Roe v. Wade. Justice Blackmun explicitly wrote that if the unborn child is a person in the whole sense under the Constitution then the decision fails.
Work for the personhood movement in your state. Bob's bill was excellent because it not only protected the dignity of babies conceived in the normal way, but all little ones brought about through perverse technologies. It was a shameful betrayal for the bishops not to support it.
Please see the article on this at the Les Femmes blog and pray for the bishops.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Kreitzer
